Sudanese shield Funj region rare african shield www.swordsantiqueweapons.com

A good example of a rare Sudanese shield.
Typically referred to as being from the Funj region of Sudan, this shield was likely a trophy of war during the Mahdist uprising in the late 19th century
This shield measures approx 80cms tall and 37cms wide.
It is constructed from a very thick hide that has been mounted to a strong central shaft, stretched, pressed and had its edges rolled. The final result is an exceptionally robust fighting shield about to withstand both sword and spear strike.
The type is seldom seen outside of collections and remains in good condition for its age.

An interesting piece of history.
