A very rare and exceptional pair of Chinese fighting swords.

These Shuang Gau or tiger head hook swords are a very rare find.
Both swords measure 95cms long overall. The blades, bottom spikes and crescent moons are stiff and of a flat diamond shape cross section.
The worn timber grips still retain most of the original cloth wrapping which is now also very well worn with use and age.
The swords are an all iron forged construction with a pair of "arms" and crescent moons protruding beyond the grips of each sword. Fine pattern welded forging surfaces can be seen throughout these swords as shown on the moon sections of the baldes.
These types of swords are recorded in ancient Chinese writings but where not seen and recorded by European sources until the 1870s. Various types of Gou are recorded but this type being the most common type known within Military and Martial circles from the late 1800's through to the very early 1900's.

A rare and exceptional sword type that would be the centre piece of any Chinese sword collection.
