A massive and rare Moro Datu Barong.

in its sheath, this Moro fighting sword measures 74.5cms long in its sheath, 65.5cms out and has a very hefty blade that measures 43cms long and just under 8cms wide.
The hilt is made from horn and inlaid with bone, a type being one of the rarer materials, carved in the rare jungayyan form.
The grip is bound in thick silver sheet, plaited silver wire and decorative silver spacers between the fine wire binding.
The blade is simply of a massive hefty form. Its edge is sharp and pattern welded surfaces can be seen beneath the patina.
The oversized, carved and pierced timber sheath is also a very rare form. Both upper and lower sections are carved from stunning finely grained timbers, unfortunately with losses as seen in the images.
Attached to the sheath is a old glued paper tag with hand written notes, pointing to this Barong to be from the island of Jolo in the Sulu archipelago.

A very rare Chief Barong.
