A good example of a Prussian Dragon sword for Chinese Officer, Boxer Rebellion era.
This example of the Prussian 1889 model is 101cms in the scabbard, just under 96cms out and has a blade length of just under 81cms.
These very rare swords have a Chinese dragon on the guard rather than a German eagle or state emblem that is normally seen.
It has been recorded that German eye witnesses to the Boxer Rebellion report finding such swords in Chinese positions at Taku and in Chinese arsenals. Refer to the web based Dragon Article- "China-Waffen" at Traditionsverband for further documentation and images of these sword used within Chinese regiments of the Boxer Rebellion.
The hilt shows some losses to the original shark skin covering and the wire binding has been lost.
The spine of the blade is thick and the blade is full in profile.
A very rare sword type in good honest issued condition right down to the thick original leather spacer at the forte and leather thumb ring within the guard.
The sword is in as found condition, still retaining evidence of the previous owners polish to the brass that will be left for the new custodian to attend to if they wish to.
A very rare sword that is seldom seen in the market place.
