A large and rare Indian Shield

A beautiful and very rare, large Indian Dhal/shield.

Quality Mughal shields in any condition are becoming increasingly harder to find. Rarer still are these larger types with 6 boss.

Given the Yellow colouring of this example, it likely represents the sun and was part of sun worshipping practices well known within the Mughal empire, worship adopted from earlier Hindu traditions.
Further to this, one of the six brass boss to the outside has its edges shaped like that of a radiating sun motif.

Both the reverse face and the fabric covering the forearm padded area are also yellow in colour, completing the sun like nature of this shield.

The forearm and hand strap are present and the shield remains in fine condition throughout. It measures 47 x 49cms and is approximately 1cms thick.

A fine and rare example.
