An early example of the type.

This robust 19th century Massai Seme measures 78.5cms long in its scabbard, out it is 78cms long, with a blade length of 64.5cms.

Overall this example is well preserved for its age, and an example that retains the original belt.
The scabbard is with minor losses as seen within the photographs provided, being the loss of the metal ring clamp to the base of the leather covering, and damage to one of the up turned corners of the scabbard mouth.

The blade is broad with the classic pronounced medial ridge and hollow forged faces found in these older examples. The base of the blade narrows to a rectangular cross section, whilst retaining the medial ridge and hollow forged faces, and ends in a hide bound grip.

An old-world Massai sword type that is becoming increasingly harder to find.
