A very large Barong, Barung, Philippines, 19th century.

In its scabbard, this Shandigan Barong measures 64.5cms long. Out is is 63.5cms, and it has a blade which is 1cms thick at the base of the spine, and 46cms long.

Whilst showing clear signs of loss and damage to the large Junggayan pommel and a small loss to the scabbard, this example has been remarkably well preserved and was made with very fine quality parts and features, as seen with attention to detail in the use of a horn spacer, high quality silver and timbers chosen for their exceptional grains and quality.
The blade type too, known as a shandigan type for its hollow forged faces and pronounced cutting edge, were also typically held in high regard amongst warriors of notable standing.

The blade does show classic pattern welded surfaces in the right light and remains untreated and in as found polish. It would grade up very well with professional attention.

A very nice large example, clearly made for a man with the means to afford the finest timbers and dress for one of the most dangerous weapons in the Philippine arsenal, as witnessed firsthand by U.S. soldiers during the American occupation.
