A very fine and rare Vietnamese Kiem with a combat ready blade.

This Kiem, whilst many are considered for court and official use, this fine example is most certainly from the Bodyguard entourage of a Mandarin Official.
The Kiem, in its scabbrd, measures 96.5cms long. Out it is 84cms with a blade length of 65.5cms.
The hilt comprises of a large Elephant molar grip and repousse silver pommel and guard with some seldom seen repousse workings along the edges of the guard.
The blade, as noted, is a combat ready example. It has a thick diamond cross section, sharp edges and its faces are deeply fullered.
The scabbard is Rosewood with classical mother of pearl inlay of floral motifs and tendrils, inlay for which the Vietnamese craftsmen are so famous for.
Holding is all in place are three repousse silver scabbard fittings with the base or drag displaying a rare Lotus motif.

A very fine example with a rare Molar grip, good quality silver and a fine fighting blade. Of a type typically seen in the arms of Bodyguards in Historical Photographs.
